Disposition of W. Fitch Cheney, M. D.

Regarding Pvt. Daniel Scantlin

State of New York County of Ontario

W. Fitch Cheney MD being duly sworn says that he is a physician and surgeon living and practicing in the village of Canandaigua New York. That he has practiced medicine and surgery in said village for five years last past.

That he well knew Daniel Scantlin a private in Co. K 98 Regiment NY Vols, and that he knew him for seven years before his death. He further says that as soon as Daniel Scantlin was mustered out of the United States Service he was called to visit him in a professional capacity, that he found said Daniel Scantlin suffering severely with chronic bronchitis and Hypertrophy of the heart. That the first time he visited that the above-named diseases were so firmly seated that he had no hopes for the curing or removing of them by medical treatment, but gave him medicine to make him more comfortable, that he believes that the above-named diseases were contracted in the United States Service, that said Daniel Scantlin was as sick with said diseases that he was confined to his room, that most of the time after he came out of the United States Service. that Daniel Scantlin died on the 6th day of July 1865 of the above-named diseases. He further says that he has no interest in the prosecution of the above claim.
