Please Meet Rider, Galaxy and JJ

My name's Don Pollock and I retired from the Department of Defense after 38+ years of government service (January 1996). Soon thereafter, to the surprise of my wife Judy, I signed up for riding lessons at a local stable in Davidsonville, MD. Having never really ridden before, I thought it only prudent to learn something about safety and the "balanced seat." I met Galaxy at that barn and leased him for about nine months. The barn where I ride now is actually a YMCA Camp and I have the good fortune of leasing JJ there. We ride English and Western, both in the ring and on trail. It is my sincere hope that you find as much enjoyment in being with, around, and up on your horse(s) as I have with mine. They are indeed wonderful creatures. Ride Safely. Don

GALAXY - A Morgan

Galaxy was my "first" horse. I leased him for nine months while learning to ride English. Always a gentleman, and completely bomb-proof, he gave me the confidence I needed to progress as I have. Our instructor talked me into participating in a barn show...and it did take a little persuasion since all the other students were young tikes and I of course am retired. Be that as it may, the other kids thought it was great to have "Uncle Don" riding with them and, to my amazement, Galaxy and I took a red ribbon in beginner level dressage and a blue ribbon for overall points, dressage and jumping. It must be pointed out that the jump was 12" high, and my grandson, Steven, astutely remarked, "Gee Pa, you sure did good...Galaxy walked right over that jump! Out of the mouth of babes. I visit Galaxy frequently and, although I haven't ridden him lately, manage to share a carrot and apple with him on those very special occasions. Several photographs of him are on my desk and his ribbons hang on the picture of the Pentagon given to me by my co-workers at my retirement. Many fond memories come pouring back as I sit and think about the good times this Morgan and I have had together.

JJ - A Pinto

JJ is a camp horse out of Camp Letts, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. I have leased him for almost two years now and find that he and I have struck quite a nice friendship. More energetic and willing than Galaxy, JJ nevertheless is unforgiving when it comes to rider mistakes. I sometimes think of him more as a "plow" that a "sleigh" because he loves to run through jumps instead of over them, and has the uncanny ability to find an escape route; i.e., runout, whenever the opportunity presents itself. We ride both English and Western, in the ring and on trail. I have noticed that one weakness I have is bonding with whatever horse I am riding, so that sometimes the horse gets away with more than it should. I know the die-hards will take me to task for this, but I just regroup and start over...and everything seems to work for the best that way. Photographs of JJ also adorn the desk and many times I find myself thinking about the good times this Pinto and I have had together.
