VISITING CHATROOM FRIENDS & THEIR HORSES

Camille & SPITFIRE - Quarter Horse

Michigan

We caught up with Camille outside Frankenmuth, Michigan, where she was participating in a day camp program for physically and mentally challenged children. After introductions and some quick hugs, she put me to work. Camille helps Mark, my riding partner, into the saddle, after which he and I "rope a steer," "shoot a bad guy," and "return to the ranch" (That's me peeking over Spit's withers in the second photo). We could only stay for half a day, and it was much too short! How rewarding, tho, to see those kids smile and know that in some small way we had made their day a better one. Keep up the good work, Camille!!!

Gail & JACKPOT - Quarter Horse

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

From North Dakota we turned north to visit Gail and Bob. Our travel park was in the heart of Winnipeg and Gail met us after work. The four of us had dinner at a great German restaurant and went back to their place afterward for a drink and small talk. Gail took off from work the next day! We went to meet Jack, her 16.3h baby, spent the afternoon touring the City and eating "beavertail," a super pastry that Judy and I fell in love with. Here Gail and I fetch her "big guy" from his paddock while his buddies look on.

Connie & POCO - Quarter Horse

Lafayette, Indiana

I left a message on Connie's answering machine that we were in Indiana and would call again in the morning (she later confided that she didn't sleep all night). Connie insisted that we hook up the trailer in her yard (water and electricity provided). We then joined Rick and kids (Becky and Jason) who were harvesting hay at their new place. Rick invited me aboard the tractor and I took the opportunity to ask a lot of "city slicker questions." Connie gave us a tour of the new house (it's very impressive), and introduced us to her dad who was helping with the carpentry work. After meeting Poco, we ended the day by dining out at a fabulous buffet (wish they had one in Maryland). Two great days with very special people.

For the record, Poco is the gentlest, most affectionate horse I have ever seen. He follows Connie like a puppy and their bond is truly something special.

The horses won't go hungry this winter
