According to Woods' 1983 Vardaman family history, John III served in the French and Indian wars. This is pretty unlikely since that war ran from 1754-63. Woods also states that in the American Revolution, John and his brother Amaziah were soldiers in the campaign of Gen. George Rogers Clark in the autumn of 1782, and also were involved in the campaign at Vincennes, Indiana.

John III was born in VA in 1753 or 1761 and came with his parents to Crab Orchard KY in about 1779. He settled in Green Co. KY and received a land grant of 200 acres. In 1798 Green Co was divided and Pulaski Co was formed; John III's farm was in Eastern Pulaski Co.

John's middle name of Morgan is from the (dubious quality) LDS AF. The Vardaman book doesn't have that middle name for him.
