William was in the American Revolutionary Battle of Point Pleasant 1774. Served as first lieut. Bedford (VA) Military, Oath 24 May 1779.

Don Woods' 1983 book also stated William served in the French and Indian War. However that couldn't have been this William Vardaman, given his 1760 birth year. Either his approximate birth year is way off, or, more likely there was another, older William Vardaman who was in the French and Indian War.
