The book, A Ram in the Thicket by Will and Mary's son Frank is a great account of Will and Mary's life together. Nearly all the information presented here on the family is from that book.

Members of Will's family had violent tempers, and in rebellion against them, he left home at an early age. He worked in the west as a cowboy from 1870-1875.

He had many good qualities, such as being a teetotaler, non-gambler, and refusing to use a gun, but his violent temper made life difficult for his family. In later years he mellowed and showed more compassion to his family and was generous to others.

Even though he was a capable, hard worker, he had difficulty staying in one place and completing a job. The family moved often -- several places in Nebraska, Idaho and Utah. He committed himself to the Mormon religion, and delighted in missionary work, often leaving his family to participate.
