He was better known as Chancy. He went to work in California for a rail road. As workers were maneuvering a train car, it fell on his leg. They didn't wait for heavy equipment before they tried to lift it off, and it fell back on his leg. His leg was amputated and he had an artificial leg. That did not stop him from leading an active life. He continued to work in California for a time.

He was a daring person and a hard worker. He served as a model for the heroes in his brother Frank's western stories. At the same time, he was kind and gentle and loved children.

He then worked as a cowhand on Charles West's ranch near Leadore, ID as the foreman. He married Mr. West's oldest daughter. In the early 20's they had their own ranch on the Lemhi River near Leadore, and about 1928 they owned a ranch in the Teton Basin near Driggs, ID. While he lived in Idaho, he also drove a school bus and enjoyed going to school games.

In 1940 his brother Frank asked him to manage his cherry orchard for him. After they sold their property, they moved there in 1941. They also owned a separate chicken and fruit farm.
