Herbert followed in his father's footsteps as a rural mail
carrier. Herbert could recall using a horse and buggy
to deliver mail when the snow was too high or mud too deep.
He delivered rural mail for 34 years, retiring on
April 30, 1968. He also served as De Witt Postmaster
for 10 years from 1936 to 1946. He didn't care for the
indoor work and eventually returned to the rural routes.
At one point when they consolidated mail routes, Herbert worked
as a farmer, but returned to the post office as postmaster
in 1936. He remembered one time in 1926 when the roads
were so bad he had to ride horseback
over his 27 mile route for 27 consecutive days.
