John was a WW I veteran, but otherwise lived his whole life in the Charlotte vicinity. He had 10 grandchildren on his death, which was caused by a stroke he had on December 26.

John's daughter Miriam wrote the following in 1997:

Never having lived with my dad, it is hard to know his habits. He bent over trying to buy objects for Joan and me. It was about 1928 when fate turned bad, a funeral every two years for six years, loss of two farms. He was 45 in 1932, 1/2 of his family gone, his income depleted, now what? He didn't turn to alcohol or women, but food (excessive) became his idol. In appearance he wa a cross between Chas. Derning and Sydney Greenstreet, and he was loveable and faithful, never missing an 8 hour or so visit on Sundays.
