Martha and Thomas Howard are commonly mentioned in published histories for Harney and Grant Co., Oregon. Martha arrived in Canyon City, Grant Co in 1861, Thomas Howard arrived there in 1862. Martha taught at the first school in Drewsey. She was a successful teacher with business ability and greatly respected by those who knew her. After the local hotel burned she built another in its place; called the Elkhorn hotel. Martha was the Postmaster for Drewsey, 20 Dec 1886.

Thomas and Martha left Grant Co., Oregon and went to Colorado in 1872. They returned to Grant Co. in 1878.

Here is an excerpt from a biography of Thomas Howard:

He was one of the gold seekers from New York on a steamer to Panama and thence to SF, a 2 month trip from Panama to the Golden Gate. He mined for a time and then went at his trade in Marysville and other places in the state. In 1859 he went to Carson and Virginia Cities, Nevada. In the spring of 1862 Mr Howard was hired to accompany a herd of cattle belonging to Job Dye to Florence, Idaho. The water around Harney lake being so high it was impossible to make headway so they turned aside...coming to where Canyon city now stands. They discovered the first gold on the creek.
