The connection between Eliza, daughter of William Matthews and
Eliza, wife of William Waters and John Robinson comes from two
key linkages. Eliza's descendent Kathleen (Covert) Yawn found
my data on the WWW and it connected with facts she had from family
records. Kathleen's records of Eliza gave her maiden name of
Matthews and had a birthdate of 12 Aug 1814 (from her obituary)
and my family records from Diana Thomas had 12 Aug 1813, both
indicating Ohio for birthplace.
Kathleen's grandfather (Eliza's grandson) also remembered some
relationship to a ``Lily'' family and a Perry Lilly, which fits
very well with Eliza's half-sister Rebecca who married John Lilly
and had a son Perry Lilly. Eliza living in Hancock Co., Illinois
is also a good clue that she is part of this Matthews family.
Eliza taught school when she was 13 years old, about 1830. Her ``Copy Book''
is in the possession of Barbara Covert Taylor.
Eliza's grandson, John Robinson Covert, thought that John
Robinson was either a friend or a business partner of William Waters.
According to the 1850 Hancock County Census, they were neighbors, only one
household apart (William had died by the time of the census).
According to family history taken from John Robinson Covert, the
Robinson family left Chillicothe, Missouri in April of 1860 and arrived
in Watsonville California in the fall of that same year. They
traveled by wagon train. This train was led by Captain Moss. There
were 65 wagons with 4 mules per wagon. Grandfather Robinson had 4
wagons. Cpt Moss owned 2 of each of the 4 mules and the barrels of
whiskey carried on each wagon, which he sold upon arrival in CA,
making him ``rich'' (``mules fetched about $200 per head back then'').
The family went to Mexico with George Buttrick the son of Hulda
Watters, they had a silver mine there. But when the war broke out
they were forced to leave and lost everything. The family had been
staying in Mazitlan, that is where Emma learned to speak Spanish.
They moved to Redwood City after leaving Mexico and John Robinson
opened a boot making shop.
