When she was young, the family moved to Mexico to mine silver, this is where Emma learned to speak Spanish. She was educated in convents and was an accomplished singer and pianist. ``She had a contralto voice.'' Her love of music appears to have been passed down through both daughters and a musically talented great-granddaughter.
She was educated between Jul 1866 and 1870 in College of Notre Dame, San Jose. Another girl in the convent with her was Ida Ghirardelli, whose father started the chocolate works in San Francisco. According to the memories of Aunt Rhoda and Aunt Bobby, Emma may have also been in a convent in Mexico and transferred to this one when they returned.
There are two land grants listed with the BLM in the name of Emma W. Covert. Both were dated 4/23/1923 for Harney County; one grant was for 160 acres and the other was for 480 acres.
