John immigrated with his parents at about age 9 and lived out his life in Fayette County. He was a rural and city mail carrier for 30 years. John was a member of the Second Presbyterian church for 60 years. He was a member of Covenant Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Maccabees.

He was naturalized a US citizen in 1877 according to the 1920 census.
