Sisters Mary Shannon Lane and Honora Shannon McGrath in 1897. Uncertain which is which. From the collection of Becky Saunders who guessed the Mary Lane was the seated one since the seated person was thinner, perhaps indicative of a hard farm life?

Mary Shannon came to U. S. in 1850 from Ireland with her brother
Patrick.
Mary and Patrick Lane moved from Clinton County, Iowa
to Pottawattamie County, just
south of Shelby in 1874. The family is in the 1885 and 1895
Iowa censuses, Pottawattamie County, Pleasant Township.
Mary lived with
her sister Honora in Clinton her last four or five years. Patrick Lane's
obituary and Mary's 1900 census entry say they were divorced,
but no court record of that has been found
in Shelby County. One of Mary's obituaries says she had
nine children in total, six dying young. We've found no records
of the additional three. The 1900 census said she had 8 children,
3 living.
Mary's middle name of Catherine is from the tombstone of daughter Mary
Lenore (Shannon) Simpson.
