Emma suffered from polio as a child in 1894. This, coupled with arthritis, made it difficult for her to walk by the time she was about age 65. She needed canes to walk with.

Emma was the Drake registrar for 35 years. Her salary was roughly $1500/year. She also wrote the words for the Drake Alma Mater.

Emma also took over her father's Elimino Medicine Co. for a time, at least. She's listed with it as her business in the 1934 Des Moines city directory. She's also listed as a teacher in 1937. All other years, her occupation is Drake registrar. She still lived at 1332 26th Street in Des Moines in 1953.
