William McCartney enlisted in the Union Army, Company E of
the 44th infantry from Keokuk County, Iowa on May 14 1864.
After his wife died, Will took his three young children and
followed his father-in-law, T.Q. Matthews, and brother-in-law,
C.S. Sprague to Sterling, Nebraska.
William is in the 1880 census of Sterling Pct.,Johnson Co.,Nebraska
with children Ella and Emma. His occupation is plasterer and mason.
Will is still living in Sterling in 1890 according to the Civil War
Veterans census (House 28), which stated he was a private in the war.
