Michael and Maggie had no children. His age varies in some of the earlier censuses. He's 8 in the 1860 census, but only 16 in 1870. His tombstone gives the exact birth and death dates. Michael was travelling to Chicago with stock in February 1902 when he was killed in a railway accident. Michael was travelling to Chicago with stock in February 1902 when he was killed in a railway accident. According to a newspaper account, Michael and several other stock farmers were sleeping in the caboose of their stock train. It was stopped in Apple River, Illinois, east of Dubuque at the station at the bottom of a hill to get water. ``It was while standing there that another train rushed down upon it.'' Another Jackson Township man, H. Pfankuch was also killed. Michael's brother Daniel was badly hurt with injuries to his breast and legs.

Michael, his brother, Patrick James, his nephew John William, and Mary Ann and Charles Louis are buried in the same row with a very large stone with Lawler on it at St. Ann's in Vail. Mary Ann and Charles share the same stone. I don't know who they are.
