Dorothy was born on a farm northeast of Hetland. She attended grade school in school #44 just a half mile east, graduating on June 27, 1919. Because of her poor health, she was sent outdoors to play. She enjoyed horse back riding and reading. She graduated with the second class to graduate from Hetland high school in 1923.
Dorothy attended Eastern State Normal School at Madison, SD, and wrote for the school paper. Her goal was to teach english and write. She received a 1st grade certificate on June 21, 1924 and taught one year at Canistota. She returned to Eastern Normal for one year and then taught at Presho for 3 years. Next she taught at country school #45 north of Hetland. While she was back in Hetland, she met her future husband, Tom Anderson. She then taught for 2 years at Forestburg where her future brother-in-law, Glen Prunty was superintendent. She helped with the girl scouts here.
After she was married, they lived in the south end of Hetland. Later they moved to the north end just across from the church and the house where her mother lived. In 1942 they moved across the street from the school. In 1943 they moved to Lake Andes where she was in civic club, and in 1945 to Salem. in 1946 they moved to Canistota. Dorothy was active at the Presbyterian Church in the women's group, as a teacher, on church council, and enjoyed most her work in the library. She belonged to Rebeccas of the Odd Fellow Lodge, senior citizens, and a study club.
Dorothy began teaching again in 1950 in the country schools around Canistota. she attended summer school as necessary to keep up her certificate and acquired nearly enough credits to graduate. She retired in 1968. Tom and Dorothy bought a house in Canistota in 1951. after 15 years of widowhood, she sold it in 1980 and moved into a senior citizen apartment. In November, 1982, she moved to Michigan to be near her daughter who lived in Lansing.
In 1990 Dorothy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and in November, moved to her daughter's home. In March, 1995, Dorothy moved back to Canistota, SD, to the good Samaritan Center there. She fell and broker her hip on Feb. 8, 1996, and died in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD shortly after the surgery to set her hip the next day. Services were held in both the united church in Canistota, and the Congregational church in Hetland.
