Alvin attended country schools and graduated from Hetland High School in 1926. He farmed on his parents farm until he enlisted in W W II. Alvin had a brief marriage which was annulled.

Cpl. Alvin Ballou enlisted and left for Camp Barkley, Texas March 6th or 7th, 1942. After 2 mo. he transferred to Det. Med Dept. Davos Monthon Field, Tucson, AZ. He was discharged Oct. 7, 1945, in Sioux Falls, SD. He belonged to the American Legion in Hetland.

Alvin worked on his mother's farm and also worked frequently for Howard Karban painting and farming. He was killed in an truck-auto accident on highway 14, 1 1/2 miles west of Arlington, SD. It was believed that the sun blinded the drivers. He suffered a crushed chest and broken left tibia. His funeral services were conducted at the Hetland Congregational Church. Alvin was buried in the Hetland Cemetery with the William Haufschild American Legion Post 263 conducting military rites. The preceding was written by Shirley (Anderson) Reed.
