Charlie farmed west of Hetland, SD, and continued farming after buying a pool hall in Arlington, SD.
The family moved to Rapid City, SD in 1955. Sometime after 1956, he was divorced from his wife Myrtle. In June, 1960, Charlie married Violet May Blacksmith, 27, and they lived in Rapid City. He worked for the Metz Bakery in Rapid City for 20 years, when he retired.
Charlie was in the 1972 flood in Rapid City caused by the bursting of the Canyon Lake Dam. His little house was carried in the flood as he stood on a doorknob and held onto a shelf above the door to keep his head out of water. The house was caught on a Rail Road trestle and a boat came by and rescued him. He lost all of his possessions in that flood.
In 1975 he moved to live with his son Vernon in Minneapolis, and then in 1979 went to the Arlington Care Center in Arlington, SD. He lived there until his death. Charlie died of hypostatic pneumonia. He had a carcinoma of the prostate with metastasis to the urinary bladder.
In the 1950 and 1952 Kingsbury Co. Farm Directories, Chas. S. Ballou is listed with a Lake Preston address, farming in Section 36, Twp 111, Range 54.
