Nancy's descendent, Carolyn Reichelt, said ``Family legend has it that Nancy was an herb doctor and took care of Abraham Lincoln during an illness and described him as `the ugliest man she ever saw'. Carolyn's mother passed this story down to her.

All Nancy's children were born in Marshall Co.,Iowa and most of them are buried at Redline Cemetery in Shelby County.

Nancy was the bride of the first marriage in Marshall County, Iowa: ``Almarion Gear, being duly sworn, deposeth and says that Nancy Ballard is over 18 years of age and that she is a resident of the county aforesaid, and her parents have given their consent to her marriage, and further sayth not.'' ``The bride was a daughter of Philip Ballard, and the marriage was solemnized by AJ Smith, first Justice of the Peace for the township of Jefferson. The groom was a son of Carpenter Gear. The occasion of the wedding is reported by those who participated in the festivities as one of the notable social events of pioneer times. The blushing bride was the recipient of attentions more demonstrative that agreeable from the merry guests''
