Tom grew up in Arcadia and served ten months in the infantry overseas during World War I. After their marriage, Tom and Veronica lived in Arcadia where was in the draying and mail carrying business. For a short time, they lived at Halbur, then moved to Carroll, where he operated an oil station at Third and Carroll Streets. When the Iowa State Liquor store opened in Carroll, Tom was its first manager. Later, he opened a hog-buying station at Breda, operating it until his retirement. Tom broke his leg in downtown Carroll two days before his death.
Tom's parents were Michael and Mary Maher, who are buried at Arcadia.
