The following story appears in the circa 1944 Lawler family history:
During 1858 the Pope was having trouble with the Italian Govt. 2 boys ran away to fight for him. They got as far as Alvira on their way, when a man picked them up. He kept them all night, but couldn't get them to tell who they were. Their names were Peter Lawler and Dave Buckley. When their folks caught up to them, Peter was caught first, but Dave hid in the brush. The dog followed him and so then they took them home. They didn't get to go fight for the Pope.
