Following their marriage, Velma and Elmer farmed in Rock Creek Township of Jasper County (just west of Poweshiek County). They moved to Gilman and farmed there for 20 years. In the spring of 1949 they moved to their farm south of Newburg. After Elmer died, Verlma moved into Grinnell and lived at Friendship Manor. She attended the Newburg United Church of Christ.
