According to Bernadine (Reed) Guinan (daughter of Bill's brother John), Bill and his brother John farmed together for several years in Clinton Co. At first they lived on the Reed farm which later was farmed by Ed Welsh, Jr. (oldest son of their sister Kate). Later, Bill and John moved to the Reed farm that was later owned by a relative, Charles Hunter.

After their marriage, Bill and Elizabeth moved to Lexington, Nebraska, then called Plum Creek, later in the same year of 1888. Bernadine (Reed) Guinan notes that ``It was very difficult to see him leave as he was so helpful taking care of our family.'' Bernadine also said Bill left when there were six children in her fathers' family.
