George attended rural schools in Clinton County and was graduated from Clinton Business College. George farmed with his father until they left the farm near Elma in 1917. George was then appointed rural mail carrier, a post he continued until his retirement in 1965, except for time out for army service during WW I.

He was a World War I veteran, serving overseas in the army as a private first class. After the his discharge and marriage, George and Clara returned to Elma where they lived the rest of his life. ``George was active in Elma affairs, ran for mayor several times, was fire chief and American Legion commander, and was a justice of the peace after retiring from the mail route in 1965.''
