Ruth started life in Clinton County, and graduated from high school in Lawler, Iowa. She became a teacher for two years, some of that time in the Indian reservations in the Dakotas, and then moved to Chicago. She and Truman lived in Chicago and St. Louis before he entered the army. Her son Terry remembers that Ruth and Terry lived with Ruth's sister-in-law June (wife of Ruth's brother Patrick Adrian) in Chicago while Truman and Patrick Adrian were in the service. After Truman died, Ruth moved back to Clinton where two of her sisters still lived.

Ruth joined the staff of the Clinton Herald in 1945 as a regional newswriter. In 1954, she became the police and courthouse reporter and 10 years later was named news editor, a post she held until her retirement January 1, 1971. Ruth was a frequent news award winner and was active in the Iowa Press Women, National Federation of Press Women and the Iowa Association of City Editors. She was a member of St. Irenaeus Catholic church, was a past president of Amvets Auxiliary and the Clinton Wa-tan-ye Club.

Truman entered the army in August 1944 and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge of WW II in January, 1945. He returned to the US About May 6 and was in the Lawton hospital from that time on. He died in June of that year of his wounds.
