Ruth joined the staff of the Clinton Herald in 1945 as a regional newswriter. In 1954, she became the police and courthouse reporter and 10 years later was named news editor, a post she held until her retirement January 1, 1971. Ruth was a frequent news award winner and was active in the Iowa Press Women, National Federation of Press Women and the Iowa Association of City Editors. She was a member of St. Irenaeus Catholic church, was a past president of Amvets Auxiliary and the Clinton Wa-tan-ye Club.
Truman entered the army in August 1944 and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge of WW II in January, 1945. He returned to the US About May 6 and was in the Lawton hospital from that time on. He died in June of that year of his wounds.
