His father died when he was only 10 years of age. He did not receive an
abundance of formal education but he had a desire to learn that caused him to
read everything that came to hand.
He said that he was raised on ``The Bible, Pilgrims Progress, The Bible
Looking Glass and Theodosia Earnest'' according to one of his many articles in
the Logan Banner, but that was not the extent of his learning. He read the
law, the news and anything that had to do with the politics. He was one of the
best informed men of his day and took every opportunity to voice his opinion
about any level of government. He was an ardent conservative Republican and
put a lot of effort into expanding those ideals. He wrote a weekly column for
the Logan Banner of Logan, WV, as ``The Old Timer'', for many years and was a
great fan of the local baseball team, ``The Logan Wildcats'' and could be found
at every game in his straight backed, cane bottom chair.
When his cousin, John Sherman Cooper, ran for election to the US Senate,
``Pop'' stumped the state to assist John in his successful election.
He was married to Iris Dee Agnes Frost and they had 5 boys and 6 girls,
each of which was independent, self-sufficient, and each with an excellent set
of inviolate moral standards. Every one performed very well in his/her field
of endeavor.
He owned a general merchandise store in Burnside, Ky. which burned down
and because he did not believe in insurance, lost everything. When he was
offered a store in Spankum, WV (about 10 miles east of Logan) he moved his
family there. Each of his children graduated from Logan High School and many
(I don't know how many) received a college education.
