William, then age 23, resident of Moscow, Iowa, enlisted in the Union army for the US Civil War on August 15, 1862 as a private. On Sept. 5, 1862 he was mustered into ``I'' Company, Iowa 35th Infantry. He was mustered out on May 17, 186? at St. Louis, Mo. (the records I was given gave 1862 as the muster out date, which has to be wrong.)
Much of my initial information about William is from the LDS AF, which is a pretty confused mess for William. One entry there had him born about 1835 in Muscatine, but another gave the 20 Apr 1839 date and place of Moscow I have used. The LDS AF data which gives that more precise date, as well as information about William's children, has his surname as Phoebe instead of Hatton.
The data for the family has been refined, particularly using records of Hatten descendent Rebecca Parry-Pigsley, so I now have much more confidence in it.
