Fenton moved to Chicago in the 1870s according to census records.
(His obituary says he moved there in 1853, but he's in Iowa censuses
through 1870.)
Fenton later lived in Oak Park next door to his son and daughter-in-law
Edwin and Mary (Maher) Lawlor.
A few years after moving to Chicago,
Fenton founded a dry goods house at Madison and Peoria streets. In 1893 he
founded the Lawlor Dry Goods company at Oakley boulevard and Madison
street, of which he remained the active head until his retirement in 1919.
