THE SEEDS, SUN, AND SHOWERS

Two seeds all alone; No water, no sun.
So long they'd lay dormant
Their souls had been shun.

The plants all around flourished with zest.
But the seeds were too shaded
So they just did their best

To live all alone; So lonely, so sad.
All the rocks and dead leaves
Were all that they had.

One very bright day, the sun came to view.
The two little seeds
Felt the warmth, so new.

They so loved the sun; "Please stay, never leave."
He also brought showers
Two drops, I believe.

The seeds, sun, and rain; So loving, so bright.
They knew it would work
Everything would be right.

The seeds blossomed out; Happiness began.
There was one woman,
Three children, and one loving man.

A BETTER LIFE

Who is there when my heart is heavy?
Where is the rainbow when my mind is a storm?
Will my body ever be free of this pain?
When will I be consoled as my tears take form?

These questions are answered each day of my life.
A smile from a stranger.  A sunshiny day.
Or my child says "I love you, Mom"
And the e-mail is there to ease the way.

One step at a time.  One breath, then another.
Gets me through  each day of my life.
But the help I get most is from God above.
I know He guides me.  I won't blow my own fife.

Without his mercy on my imperfect soul,
I could not make it through my life all alone.
He promises a better life for me someday.
Through the wonders of life, his grace he has shone.

Who is there when my heart is heavy?
Only someone, as God  could carry my load.
Will my body ever be free of pain?
A new body so perfect will be ours, we are told.

I CAN DO IT
There is so much to do.
I see the time pass by so quickly.
I should get to my work.

I still haven't moved.
Maybe later after an hour nap.
Read my e-mail then lurk.

Angry at myself for sitting.
Too tired and breathless to get going.
One  of my faults. Just a quirk.

Should give up on myself.
I'll just quit that old job right now.
My responsibilities, I'll shirk.

I'm only kiddin, I think.
Out the door.  On my way to the car.
"I can do it", I smirk.

THE STRIFE OF LIFE

Make a list, you must be fair
Give pros and cons that "lungers" share.
IN THE MORNING , MUST COUGH AND CHOKE.
CHEST FEELS HEAVY, FEEL I'LL CROAK.
I take my meds. I feel much better.
Thanks to science.  I could be deader.
I FEEL DEPRESSED.  I WON'T GET UP.
LEAVE ME ALONE.  (I'LL BE ABRUPT!)
I take a shower. The steam feels good.
It helps me breathe more like I should.
MY FRIENDS ARE FUN.  THEY LIKE TO TEASE.
I LAUGH SO HARD, I START TO WHEEZE.
My nebulizer works real well
To stop this coughy, wheezy hell.
I'M FEELING GOOD.  THE KIDS GET SICK.
I GET THEIR COLDS.  I'M UP A CRICK.
Prednisone or another med
Will once more get me out of bed.

I know I'm ill.  It's changed my life.
But my life is worth all the strife.

Dad

Someday he'd be a respected man,
 Famous for his deeds.
He'd make a mark upon this earth
By meeting peoples' needs.

Maybe a scientist of sorts
Or a universal scholar.
He'd do something for others,
Not for the almighty dollar.

Feeling good about himself
Was a thing he must have needed,
Because in everything he did,
He thoroughly succeeded.

All who love him are very proud.
They give him much high praise,
But this is not the whole story
Of all his seemingly perfect ways.

Being what you're expected to be
Is impossible to live up to.
As you age, things get tougher.
Some things you can no longer do.

You try not to dwell on the past,
The good name that you made for yourself.
It makes you feel inadequate
It can even affect mental health.

He hopes that no one will notice
How he has to search for a word.
He silently strives for emotional strength
Though his need to cry can be heard.

He wants to let go of the notion
Of a man who needs to be strong.
He knows it's an old wive's tale.
And he wants to believe it is wrong.

If only he knew that the man that he is,
Is all he ever needed to be,
To be loved by and greatly appreciated
By all of his friends and family.

Dear Dad, this poem is written for you.
We finally know your "human" side.
No need to hide your emotions with us
You couldn't be more loved, if you tried.

THE SILENT WOMAN

The silent woman with aging hands
Sits in her chair, makes no demands.
Deep in thought; dreams so real.
She has a smile, what does she feel.

Days gone by with memories strong,
All things sweet, nothing is wrong.
She sits by the lake, she isn't sad.
The man with the fish must be her dad.

Spirited soul, carefree and wild.
Yet loving and caring, temperament mild.
Waiting for something to alter her life.
Some day she'd meet him and be his wife.

Young woman in love, so proud to be,
In the arms of her man, so tenderly.
Sweet breath of a child held to her breast,
Many more children, without any rest.

The chair rocked her babies, not any more.
It still sits in the room.  But who is it for?
The silent woman with aging hands
Who sits in her chair and makes no demands.

Written by Katlyn (10 years old)
I Am....
I am a snake slithering around looking for my meal.
I am a flower getting ready to bloom.
I am a bobcat running from a mother bear protecting her cubs.
I am a bird flying free.
I am the moon lighting a traveler in the dark.
I am a killer whale swimming fast, fast away from a
whale trapper.
I am a mouse trapped in a cage.
I am a wolf howling at the blue corn moon.
I am a deer running from a hunter who is trying to shoot me.
I am a shark who is scared of a shark hunter trying to kill me
for my jaws and sharp teeth.
I am the tornado who killed millions of families and tore down
many houses and buildings.
But mostly I am me.

A CHRISTMAS WISH

A WISH OF LOVE AND HEARTFELT SMILES
THAT CONNECT THE FAMILY THROUGHOUT THE MILES

A WISH OF HAPPY AND CHEERFUL FACES
OUR FAMILY JOINED IN WARM EMBRACES

A WISH OF FAMILY AND A CHRISTMAS FEAST
WE’LL SAY SOME PRAYERS, ONE AT LEAST

A WISH OF MEMORIES OF THOSE WHO’VE PASSED
THEIR LOVING MEMORIES I KNOW WILL LAST

A WISH OF BETTER TIMES WE’RE SURE TO SEE
WHAT WONDERFUL TIMES THEY’RE GOING TO BE

A WISH THAT HEAVENS GATES WILL JOIN US ALL
WE’LL DINE TOGETHER, WHEN THE LORD DOES CALL

My Father

My father’s a man who’s above all others-
The one most respected, along with my mother-
When I was a boy, he kept me from harm-
He brought us all up, right there on the farm-

Sometimes we’d fear him, when bad things we did-
I’d always get caught, while my brother just hid-
Most usually my fears were so much unfounded-
Cause he’d spank us with words, which left us astounded-

My dad would do things most dads wouldn’t do-
He’d take us to places, from the park to the zoo-
He’d always do things, some that may seem  small-
They weren’t small to me. I remember them all-

From doughnuts each weekend, to fun camping trips-
He’d take us on long drives, sure to hit all the dips-
To see us smile, was all he ever wanted or needed-
He’d go way out of his way to get that completed-

We didn’t have money, but I never felt poor-
We had all that we needed, and oh so much more-
He didn’t tell me he loved me, but somehow I knew-
His love was exuded in all the things he would do-

If I had just one wish in life that would come true-
Dad, my one wish would be, to be just like you-
Because you’re a good man, so honest and true-
Your faith in the Lord has always got us through-

Dad, I love you very much-Happy Fathers Day, Mike   6/6/2000

Colleen
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Colleen’s a girl so pretty and smart-
Her beauty within comes straight from the heart-
With eyes so blue and a smile so bright-
On the darkest of days she brings out the light-

Colleen’s had troubles I’ll have to admit-
But she overcame them, she just wouldn’t quit-
Learn from mistakes, that’s just what she did-
She worked so hard for her troubles to rid-

Her Mom and Dad have never been prouder-
We’ll scream to the world, then scream it louder-
She’s a great person and we want you to know-
The more that you love her the better she’ll grow-

We’ve all made mistakes, I know this is true-
But now we can talk and sort out the clues-
She’s such a good person she always has been-
But when she was troubled, she hid it within-

Time heals all if you just trust in the lord-
Believe in him, he’ll guide you to his final reward-
When times are tough as they sometimes are-
Just pray to him, he’ll hear you-he’s never too far-

Rapid Waters
a song written
by Katlyn and Jacki Adkins
2000

I like to raft down the white water rapids.
I like to swim in the deep blue sea.
I like to play in the clear blue water.
Something secret no one else can see.

*Chorus

I like to play in the sun all day.
I like to play in the clear shiny bay.
I like to look on the shore for seashells.
Something secret no one else can tell.

*Chorus

*Rapid water flowing through the ground.
Rapid water waiting to be found.
Rapid water just for you and me.
Rapid water no one else can see.

Christmas time

Christmas time it’s all so merry with all the joy it brings-
There’re gifts and toys for girls and boys and lots of songs to sing-
We think of things we have to buy so the kids will have it all-
The boy a new computer, the girls want phones to call-

How often do we stop and think what Christmas really means-
It’s more than gifts and toys and songs, it’s more than all those things-
Christmas is a special day a baby came to be-
His name was baby Jesus, he came for you and me-

People came from miles away to see the babe that day-
Somehow they knew this special child would change the world some way-
And now we know just who he is, and why we all should praise him-
The child has grown to Jesus Christ, Gods son, savior-

The Power of a Queen

My eyes wander across the battle field
I spot my knight with sword and shield

I send him out to do my deed
upon his strong and mighty steed

He captures a rook, he thinks he’s free
But then comes a bishop with a look of glee

I have to think quickly, my times running out
I spot a pawn just sitting about

He’s sent out to do his work in denial
He captures a bishop with an odd looking smile

Then I see it one move to the right
If I make the move it’s the end of the fight

I check once more in the thought I am safe
Then I make the move no time do I waste

Then without wasting time, clearly I state
The one word that clearly means fate
“Checkmate”

The king realizing his fate
With nowhere to run
With saying checkmate
The game is now done
