Notes for George Daniel Richards:
George first appears in the census in Harrison County Mississippi on August 29, 1850. He was living in dwelling number 173 with his first wife Frances and their two oldest children. His father-in-law Joh Ludlow was living with them. George listed his occupation as none. John Ludlow was listed as a surveyor. Although George listed his occupation as none, it is believed that he was a Surveyor throughout most of his life.
George and his family moved to Belton in Bell County Texas in the early 1850's. His wife Frances died a couple of years after arriving. George and his second wife Amanda remained in Belton in Bell County Texas throughout the rest of their lives. It has not ben learned when they died, but I believe that they are buried in South Belton Cemetery with his brother Abraham or in North Belton Cemetery with his sister Martha.
George was a member of the independent blues which organized on March 29, 1859. This group was designed to protect the citizens of Bell County from Indian massacres. On April 1 the Independent Blues received a loan from the state of Texas for forty Colt's Navy Revolvers, which were distributed to the members of the company.
On February 5, 1862 he enlisted in the civil war as a Private in Company A Flournoys regiment Texas Infantry. In May of 1862 he was listed as a Corp. He was listed as sick from June 18-July 15, 1862. Resigned as Corp Sep 20, 1862. In July and August 1863 he was listed as a Private. In January and February 1864 he was detailed at the steam mill. He resigned there on February 1, 1864.
