After graduating from S.F.A. in 1951, I taught physical education, Texas history, and science in Livingston, Humble, Henderson and Tyler.  My teaching assignment also included coaching volleyball and girls basketball.  My Master of Arts degree in physical education was received from the University of Northern Colorado in 1957.  In 1987 I retired after 36 years of teaching. I have no children of my own, but I take great pride in the success of my nephew and niece.  My great niece lived with me for a time and I feel I played an important role in her life during her formative years.  Now I'm enjoying her 21 month old son, Nathaniel, who is the light of my life.

My fondest memories of Center High School included the fun I had  and the friends I made in the band.   Also, I appreciate the dedicated teachers who were such a good influence in my life. When I first retired, I did volunteer work at the Food Bank and took classes in art, philosophy and music from Tyler Junior College.  It was great to be able to learn just for the enjoyment and not have to worry about grades.  It has been my good fortune to be able to travel extensively in the United States and several other countries.  I almost forgot - I work out at the Wellness Center four days a week in order to keep my weight at only 20 pounds over my high school weight.

boy1.gif (308 bytes)I am taking a good while to answer your letter. The reason is I am not sure I am in the right class.  My last school days were in 1943.  Some of the students from   my classes could have still been there in 1947.  I would like to know.

Sketches on my last 50 years... I left sand hill in 1947 and went to Galveston.   From 1941-1945, I followed electric welding on rigs & tankers at Consolidated Steel in Orange, Texas. I worked at the dry docks in 1949. I did not like that type of work.  Edna, my sister's husband husband, from Houston picked me up and got me jobs from guard contractors.  I worked around and in the City of Houston, at banks, warehouses and plants.  I worked at A.O. Smith, Reed Roller Bit, and finally they put me on at Consolidated Chemical located on Manchester Street, south of Houston.  I worked at their main gate office for about 30 years.  I left here in 1982 after selling my home, lived with my mother all that time.  Never been married in all my life so I do not have a spouse or children.  Both my grandmothers on the Samford side and my mother's side are dead and also including my parents.  I lived with my sister and mother, helping her see after mother from 1982 until 1993.  After she died I moved in a trailer seven miles from Center on the Fulsom Chapel Road.  I have been retired since 1982.  I live by myself.  Edna, my sister, lives 2 miles on the same road from me.  She lost her husband in 1993.  They did not have any children, she has not remarried.  Well my fondest memories of high school 54 years back from now and I do not remember much back on them.

A Teflon Banker would most describe my occupation during the past 50 years.  It all began when Mr. P. D. Jones rescued me from Davenports 5 & 10 cent where I worked while in school until 1950.  The State Guarantee Bond bank in Center, Branch Manager of Credit Union in Japan, Loan officer with the Union State Bank in San Antonio, Assistant cashier with the First National Bank in Center while Robert was in Vietnam, Homestead Bank in Houston, full working partner in our   ornamental iron business in Houston, Cashier with the Citizens State Bank in Tenaha were place and things I did.  What I really wanted to do, I did.  At the age of 55, I became a cosmetologist.  When finally my body said enough is enough I took down my shingle and converted my beauty shop back into a bedroom.  Now I dabble in direct sales.

Spouse:  Robert Barnett.

Children: Wanda Jean Jones, Carolyn Lee Kammerer, Michael John.

Grandchildren:  Kevin, Melissa.

Fondest memories:  Mr. Wyatt's algebra class & Mr. Sam Williams Civic Class.

A small town girl who had ventured out of Center only for some same day shopping and an occasional overnight stay to attend an out of town funeral and maybe a few little excursions with friends to suddenly a whole different world---that was me.   Enjoying every minute of it from The Ladies Saddle club in Center to exotic Mikado in Tokyo my life has been complete and blessed. Who would have thought that I would be sailing a thirty foot trimaran around the coast of Japan and getting hopelessly lost in the most confusing city in the world. Not to mention getting sea sick while Still in the harbor.--I did those things.

With a husband, who returns my love, I have been places, done things and just plain enjoyed life as it came.  The far away places have been nice but look where I am now, Center, where it all began.  There is truly no place like home with friends and family.  Thank you Lord.

Lived in Odessa, Texas. Grants, New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and presently. Sun Lakes, Arizona,  a retirement community in The-Valley-of-The-Sun.  (Phoenix Metro).   I met my wife and lover-to-be in Odessa.  Faye and I were married in Midland on April 6th 1957.

While living in Grants, our three children were born.  They are:  Robert, his wife Darla. Their three children are:  Tyne, Tata, and Tara.  Rob, a Dr. of Education, is a Professor and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.  Darla is a Registered nurse at Methodist Hospital.   Randal and his wife, Kim.  Their three children are:  Pieper, Chad and Maloree.   They make their home in Tempe, only 15 minutes from us.  After attending Lubbock Christian University for three years, Ran has been in the family drilling business which operates out of Grants, N.M.  Kim is office manager at Conley Elementary School in Chandler. Reisa and her husband, Steve Williams.  Their two daughters are:  Kailee and Grace.   They live in the Colony, which is a little town in north Dallas.  Reisa is a reservationist with Budget-Rent-A-Car.  She also attended Lubbock Christian University for three years.  Steve is a certified Dental Technician and operates his own lab in Dallas.

I did not attend college.  My wish was to get on with making my fortune, and higher education (I thought at the time) would just get in the way.  My wife, Faye, is a graduate of Abilene Christian University, with a degree in Business Administration.   She is a loving wife and mother, and pampers all eight of our grandchildren to no end.  They call her Mama-Faye, and me Daddy-Bob.  And we JUMP when we hear those enduring words.  We had visited the Phoenix area often before moving down.  I say down as Albuquerque is over a mile high, and Grants is 6,500 elevation.  The temp. often gets above 110, and 120 degrees at times here.

SOME HEAT-INDUCED HUMOR: YOU ARE IN THE VALLEY-OF-THE SUN IN THE SUMMER IF:  You  wash your hair, go to the mailbox, and it's instantly dry.  You spread birdseed for wild birds, and they only eat what's in the shade.  No one parks their car facing the sun.   Cut down a shade tree and go to jail.  Spit never reaches the sidewalk.  You pull over for ambulances and air conditioning trucks.  You open you fridge, and your pet tries to jump in.  AND LAST, BUT VERY IMPORTANT:  You take a cold shower before sex.  To Close:  Fondest memories of high school ? ? ?  Seeing it my rear mirror!

After leaving high school I spent a very short time at Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches and then returned to Center where I went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.  In 1955 because of the approaching dial conversion I accepted a management position in Rosenberg, Texas.  I remained in Rosenberg about seven years and then transferred to Liberty, Texas in 1963.  I traveled for about a year conducting training programs in the offices in our district and in 1966 I moved to Waco, Texas.   I have had a number of different jobs in Waco and retired in 1989 as a Communications Technician in the electronic switching office.

During the years since I left high school I've enjoyed a number of different activities.  In the early 50's I started flying there in Center.  The field was where it now, only then it was a cow pasture.  That only lasted a couple of years I haven't flown since I left home.

Over the years I've tried to remain involved in music in some way but never really had the opportunity until I came to Waco.  The Waco Community Band was organized in 1981 and I enjoyed playing trumpet with them for ten years.  From time to time I've had the chance to sing with a small band here in Waco.

When I first came to Waco I became close friends with two sister (identical twins) who also worked for the telephone company.  I soon became a part of the many activities they were involved in.  They owned Palomino horses and though I've never been a good rider I enjoyed riding in the Grand Entry at the Heart of Texas Rodeo every year.  They also owned a ski boat so I learned to water ski.  We were on the company bowling team for a number of years and I won the city doubles with another friend one year.

I've always loved animals and when Waco opened their new zoo a few years ago I enjoyed doing a little volunteer work there.

In 1984 the three of us built together just out of Waco on the Brazos River.  We enjoy boating and a little fishing.  Since we are all retired and in good health we travel as much as possible.

In the bulletin that was sent to us we were asked to recall our fondest memories of high school.  I have many.  It's difficult to narrow them down to only one or two.   I would include my parents, grandparents, teachers, band, Friday night football games, concerts and any activities involving what I would have to say are my fondest memories of all....my friends.  They are what made my high school years probably the best of years of my life.

I have held several jobs, but the last 27 years and the job I retired from was the Farmers State Bank in Center.  I am married to Denny L. Adams.   He is retired from the Center School System, as Junior High Principal.  We have two children.  Our daughters Lis is married to Larry Myers.  They have two Sons:  Wesley and Matt.  Our son Randall has two children, Josh and Kathryn.  It is hard to say what my fondest memories of school are, for they are many.  I believe I enjoyed almost everything except the studying.  A lot of the school friendships have lasted through the years. I spent my entire life in Center, and have lived in the same house for 47 years.  I enjoy traveling, and have taken many tours since retiring.

Thirty seven of the last fifty years I utilized attending college and teaching high school students.  I remain single and presently reside in Mom's home and provide care for her while she resides in Pine Grove Nursing Facility.

My fondest memories of my high school career would have to be the privilege of having been taught my Mrs. Edwin Liem and Mr. F. L. Moffett.  I certainly was not an over achiever in either of their classes, but having been associated with two individuals of their caliber has greatly contributed to my life an success as an educator.  They will always hold a special place in my heart.

I received a Bachelor and Masters Degree from Stephen F. Austin University with a major in Business Education.  Over the years I have also done some post-graduate work at U.T. Austin.  I started my teaching career in 1951 at Vidor High School and retired from Nederland High School in 1984 having completed 33 years in education.  Those were very happy and productive years for me, and I shall cherish them always.  Frankly, teaching and working with students, is the only really enjoyment in the school business.

Teacher.  I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas on January 15, 1951.  After graduating from college, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served until April 1960.  I taught from 1960 until February, 1986. I retired in 1986 and have been living at 127 Hudson Street, Center, Texas since then.  I have lived in California, Tennessee, Virginia, New York City, and the territory of Hawaii before it became a state.

I was demolition's expert in the Marine Corps.  In 1951 I was selected to fly form Quantico, Virginia with seven other Marines to Hiroshima, Japan, to view the damage caused by the atomic bomb dropped on that city.  It was awesome.
