Easter  eggs

Easter eggs may either be just plain hard boiled eggs or blown eggs.  For blown eggs, first soak in a solution of vinegar and water. This makes the shell more receptive to color.  Make a tiny hole at either end of the egg, and blow slowly until the yolk comes out (save it for baking).

For hard boiled eggs (which we prefer), again, either soak in a vinegar solution or add vinegar to the water you use to boil it.

Crayon resist is my favorite method for decorating Easter eggs.  It is quick and easy and yet, with the right choice of colors, the effects are beautiful.  To make eggs in a variety of colors, prepare bowls with the different colors of food coloring.   Add a spoonful of vinegar to the colored water (you can also try using vegetable color dyes).  Decide on what color your background will be and make lines, squiglies, zigzags and other designs on the egg using the colors which contrast well with your planned background.  Light colors like yellow, white, and apple green work very well with dark backgrounds.  Remember to use the crayon heavily for best results. After making the design, dip the egg in the bowl of food coloring.  Take it out when you have the shade you want.  You can also try dipping half the egg in one color and the other half in another color.

Try out these color combinations:
Dark blue food coloring  with yellow, white, red, orange, apple green or fuschia crayons
Dark green food coloring with yellow, white, red, orange, light blue, or fuschia crayons
Red food coloring with White, yellow, green, or blue crayons
