Potato Stamping

This is a project even very young children can enjoy.  Depending on the designs and paints you use, you can make a variety of projects such as giftwrappers, gift tags, stationery, table napkins, table cloths, t-shirts, and many more.

MATERIALS

small sharp knife
firm fresh potatoes
poster paints or fabric paints (depending on your project)- for pastel colors,                     buy small bottles of red, blue and yellow and a big bottle of white
mixing tray
paint brushes
felt stretched over wooden board (optional) or sponge
scrap paper for test printing and patterns
paper towel
pencil
cookie cutters and other items for cutting ( such as old film tins, metal lipstick/ pencil covers)
pre-cut project papers

HOW TO

1. Assemble all materials and prepare your work surface
2. Cut potato staight down middle and leave to dry on paper towels.
3. Sketch your design and cut out your pattern.
Or you may also draw the design directly on the potato with a felt tip pen.
    - create designs using simple shapes, the most simple ones being triangles, squares and bars
    - patterns are created by regular repetition of the shapes
4. Pin your paper pattern to the flat surface of the potato and cut around it for a cleanly shaped stamp.
Make sure to cut the potato well away from the design so that the edges will print cleanly.  Or use cookie cutters and other items to make circular shapes.
5. Mix paint colors. Paint should be fairly thick.
6. Spread paint into felt pad or sponge, allow to be absorbed.  Press stamp unto felt or sponge and test print before stamping on project paper. Or use a paint brush to put paint on the stamp.
7. Let each layer dry before over printing with other colors.
8. Submerge stamps in cold water to keep them fresh. They will keep for 1 - 2 days in the refrigerator.
