When I was younger, I used to think it wasn't cool to be religious or to love God with your whole heart, soul, mind and strength - that was for older people - you know, the little old ladies in long black dresses with lace collars. I was in college then, and of course, I didn't want to be one of my imagined little old ladies.
But, out of curiosity, I attended a prayer meeting with my family. My sisters had been telling me about how the people there would sing out loud and raise their hands and do other weird stuff. Totally different from what I knew religion to be. I found it really interesting, but still, most of the people there were older, so that meant it still wasn't "okay" to attend those meetings.
Then one day I attended another meeting, this time with a bigger group. To my surprise, the people playing the music were young! They were like me! And they seemed to be having the time of their lives, dancing and singing songs about God with all their hearts. I realized that it was wonderfully okay to love God and I was grateful that I had come to know Him in a personal way while I was still young.
The leader of that music ministry was a young man and I watched in amusement as he tried in vain to get the people to stop clapping while they were learning a new song. Who would ever have known that about 11 years later that man would become my husband!
Much has happened since that special day in 1975. I have experienced the joy of becoming a mother, and from that experience, have learned many lessons from my daughter about God's love for me. I have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and experienced the pain of losing my husband to cancer. Throughout that most difficult time, I learned even more of God's love and faithfulness to me. I'm not yet a little old lady, but I wouldn't mind being one, as long as my heart can still sing praises to God for all the wonderful and amazing things He does. The Lord truly makes all the difference.
