BICKETT
There are some things in life that we are forever thankful to someone else for.  Such is the case for almost all the information that I have on my Mother's side of the family.  As with the Morris lines, having a book handed to me, all the information that I have on the BICKETT line has been given to me on a silver platter.  Fortunately, a cousin that my Mother grew up with has been more than generous and kind with her information.  And for that, one of these days I will finally show how appreciative I am to "Aunt" Aggie for her generosity and unselfishness.

This is an excerpt from a paper that was  given to me on the History of the BICKETT Family.  The notation states, "As copied from some very old records and from the Kentucky State Historical Society".

"On the Rolling Fork River near where now stands the town of Raywick, KY, and in the year 1798, there settled William Bickett, who emigrated with other families from Maryland, near Baltimore.  William Bickett's family consisted of him, his wife and seven children, five  boys and two girls, when he left Maryland; and on the way to Kentucky, somewhere in the Cumberland Mountains, another son was born, that was on March 15th, 1798.  His name was Nathaniel.  While the wife was sick and unable to travel, the rest of the  company opened a large sugar camp and  made enough sugar to do them twelve months.  William Bickett left behind him when he died, a name that has not ceased, and one that has been referred  to with veneration by his numerous descendants.  Some of these still live at Raywick, Marion County, Kentucky, Marion County having been a part of Washington County until 1834."

The paper goes on to talk about the descendants of William Bickett, which I have listed in the pedigree below, and their vocations.  I got a chuckle out of part of the last paragraph.  Talking about all the sons of William Bickett, it says, "Combining the old Bicketts all together, they were industrious, sober, hard working men,  and I will say, spiritually, mentally and physically, few could excel them.  The seven older boys did not have the advantage of an education, yet their judgment was always in the right side.  They were all true blue democrats and what is more strange, their farms all joined my father's farm which happened to be in the middle and he could stand on his land and talk all around to his brothers."  This was a paper that was written by Seth Bickett, son of Nathaniel, the Bickett that was born in the Cumberland Mountains.

On July 12, 1999 I drove through Raywick, KY.  While there, I found the house that William Bickett built in the very early 1800's.  Unfortunately, I could get no one to answer the door.  One day, however, I will return.  Take this link to view William Bickett's house.

A couple  items to take note - I am told that William Bickett came  to Maryland from England as an indentured servant.  After working long enough to earn his freedom from his debt, there is a possibility that he later served as a Judge in Frederick County, Maryland.  Frederick County would have covered everything from just west of Baltimore to the western most end of the State.  Ironically, the area in which I now live.  I have researched this at the Maryland State Archives and cannot substantiate this claim.  It appears to me from personally looking at the original book that contains the "Oath of Allegiance", the "Judge" was someone else, not William.  Another I can not substantiate is the claim William was given the land grant in Kentucky for serving in the 50th Maryland Regiment during and after the Revolutionary War.  Although descendants have become members of the DAR because of this claim, the Archivist at the State Archives can find no evidence that the 50th Maryland Regiment ever existed.

There are several dates that I have not listed below.  This research was compiled by someone other than myself.  I have not validated the dates listed here, although it appears that the researcher does have documentation to back up the dates and claims.  Majority of the marriages appear to have happened In Raywick, KY and many of the people listed here look to be buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Raywick.  Some of the family also lived in Union Co., KY.  The information that I have received also lists the parents of some of the people that married the BICKETT's.
