James Ewing (Jim) was the son of John William ( Buck) McDaniel and Emma Eugene Ledbetter. There were 3 siblings, 2 brothers, Willie & Ed, and a sister Elizabeth ( Lizzie. ) I don't have the mates to these siblings, but Ed had 3 children ; Artie, Arthur & Nancy, and Aunt Lizzie had 2 sons, Peter & John.
My goal here is to find Jim grandparents. His paternal grandmother, Barbara Stack married a McDaniel, who has to this point remained a mytery to me. I'm also looking for the family of his mother, Emma Ledbetter. It is my understanding that Buck & Emma are buried in Port Royal, Robertson, Tennessee. If you happen to have this information, please contact me. |

Jim was a share cropper for most of his life. He raised tobacco for land owners and his share kept a roof over his family's head and food in their stomach's. He walked many a mile behind a mule, plowing the fields, suffered many a back ache from stooping to plant the tobacco slips, fought the elements for his crops, losing as often as he won, sometimes coming out with only $0.75 cents to show as a monatary amount for his year of work.
But my Popa Mc was a fun and loving person. He saw God in everything, always had a smile and twinkle in his eyes. It has been said that he was colored blind, but the man found the world to beautiful for me to really believe that. In all my life, I never quessed if it was true. |
