The earliest recorded Chamblis in America was found on a ship list coming from Barbadoes. Richard Chambliss arrived in 1634 and Morris Chamblis arrived in 1663. The variations of spelling are Chambliss, Chambless, Chamness, Chamnes and Chamblis. No one has any documented proof of the country of origin. The people of Southern Illinois, where our tree branch settled, pronounced the name Chambers hence the spelling change from Chambliss to Chambers.
