Over the years many Scots left their home land, moving to Northern Ireland and settled in the Province of Fermagh. In 1566, the soldier and patriot Robert Alexander McSpadden was awarded the medal first class for bravery in the fight for freedom and liberty of the Irish nation. It is also documented that R. A. McSpadden was a very religious man. One of the last pieces of information from the national registry of ireland states that in 1817, the then ship builder, John Anthony McSpadden, emigrated to North America.
"The surname McSpadden is a derivative of "MacFadyen" which is the closest English translation of the Celtic name and the clan is a sept of the MacClaines of Lochbuie, the small islands off the west coast of Scotland. The mother clan was descended from Eachan Heaganach who received the lands of Lochbuie sometime after 1354 from John, 1st Lord of the Isles, of the powerful McDonald clan. In Scotland the name McSpadden means "Spader" ... "tiller of the soil".
The story persists among several sources of McSpadden family history that three brothers came from Ireland to America - one - Thomas - settling in Virginia and the other two in Pennsylvania. The belief is that all McSpaddens found in the new world are descended from these three. At the time of this report, no traces of the two northern emmigrants or any of their descendents have been found. All the people reported here descend from the Thomas who settled in Virginia.
