There are two lines of Coop/Kupe family that immigrated to America. The Germany family line makes up about 75% of the total number and the English family line makes up 25% of the total number. The name in Germany means top of the hill and the name in England means people of the hills or mountains.
The English COOP family lineage dates back to Coloniel days in America with Richard Coop married to Hannah Stansbury, 1747 in Baltimore County, Maryland. As recently as 1975, a Coop immigrated from London to America settling in San Diego, California. (as per Phil Coop)
The German COOP family lineage dates to Worms, Germany in 1755 with David Kupe/Coop. At 15 years of age, David's father William Kupe advised him and his 17 year old brother John to go to America to escape military service. They did, coming by way of England and landing in Boston, Massachusetts. This line is found in America around 1794 when David Coop married Christina (Stouffer) Stofer in Virginia. (as per E. A. Coop)
Another Coop which may be a third line is John Coop married to Susahhan Monk of Virginia about 1780. No link has been found to any of these lines.
There are several spellings of the name. These include: Coop, Coope, Cope, Cupp, Koupe, and Kupe. Some changed the Coop spelling of the name to Coope to distinguish it from Cooper.
RICHARD COOP was born 1720, and died 1786. He married Hannah Stansbury December 10, 1747 in Baltimore, Harford Co., Maryland.
