Dr Jerome William Broughton

A descendant of V Broughton

The following is a true yet sadly touching story as told by the Waco Tribune-Herald on Sunday, December 9, 1984 (pg 13C).

"Dr. Jerome WIlliam Broughton, 76, who was instrumental in Woodway's incorporation as a city (in Texas), died at 11:38 a.m. Saturday, minutes after services began for his wife, Thelma Broughton.

"Both were injured in a two-vehicle accident Thursday night at the intersection of Old McGregor Road and the U.S. Highway 84 westbound access road, also known as Woodway Drive.

"Services for Dr. Broughton, who lived at 100 Broughton Drive in Woodway, will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Tim Griffin officiating.

"Masonic graveside services will be at Waco Memorial Park under the direction of Lodge No. 92 AF&AM.

"Mrs. Broughton, 75, died late Thursday night at a local hospital from injuries suffered in the accident. Services for Mrs. Broughton were at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

"An autopsy on Broughton is pending, a nursing supervisor at Providence Hospital said Saturday.

"A Waco man who was driving the second vehicle involved in the accident was charged Thursday night with involuntary manslaughter in Mrs. Broughton's death and driving while intoxicated.

"David S. Trout, 28, was released on bond, which was set at $5,000 on the involuntary manslaughter charge and $1,000 on the DWI charge.

"Dr. Broughton was born March 6, 1908, in Palestine, son of Ola James Broughton and V Broughton.

"He was a clerk for the Great Northern Railroad and worked as a dental assistant. He later graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He practiced optometry in Waco for 26 years.

"He also was involved in real estate, the B&Butane Co. and Tonk Products in Crawford. He owned the B-J quarter horse ranch between Crawford and McGregor. He owned Broughton Water Co. which he sold to the city of Woodway.

"Dr. Broughton was active in the incorporation of Woodway and was responsible for the development of the Woodway Little League field which is named for him.

"He and the former Thelma Steele were married for 57 years.

"The couple traveled extensively in Europe and the United States and made six around-the-world trips on the S. S. Rotterdam.

"Dr. and Mrs. Broughton were charter members of Lakewood Christian Church.

"Dr Broughton was a member of Waco Masonic Lodge No. 92, Waco Scottish Rite Temple, Karem Masonic Temple and ROyal Order of the Jesters.

"He was a charter member of Karem Motor Patrol and a member of Karem Oasis Motor Home Travel Unit, Thousand Trails, Central Texas Quarter Horse Association, Starlight Dance club and American Optometric Society.

"Survivors include a daughter, Mrs Stanley G. (Bille Jean) Jayroe of Waco; two grandsons (David Jayroe of Waco & Bill Jayroe of Corpus Christi); and one great-grandchild (William Chase Jayroe of Corpus Christi).

  • Another article elaborates on the story from the side of Jerome's wife. According to the article Thelma Steel Broughton was born January 27, 1909, in Palestine. She graduated from Oakwood High School in Oakwood and attended Mary Hardin-Baylor College in Belton. In addition to her grandchildren, she was survived by two sisters, Audrey Steel of Waco and Mrs. Elna Winifred Davis of Alice, TX; a brother, Dr. John H. Steel of Hillsboro.
  • Jerome Broughton's death also resulted in an editorial titled "A new tragedy on Highway 84" in which the paper's editors call for improvements to Highway 84 including an interchange between Loop 340 and Estates Drive.

So even in death , a man who led by example was making a difference
in "a community that he pioneered"... the place he called home.
