William Broughton's Family

William Broughton was born in Jefferson County, New York on June 29, 1822 to Amos Broughton III and Nancy Timmerman Broughton. On March 24, 1844, William married Rebecca Cosper of Wayne County, Ohio. Rebecca's birthdate was December 12, 1825.

William was very active in the community. He built the Albion and Kendallville schoolhouses, two churches in Albion and a number of other buildings in Noble County, Indiana. He supervised the making of brick for the Northern Indiana State Prison. He appraised real estate in Noble County in 1862 and held the office of County Commissioner among other positions in Allen Township, Noble County, Indiana.

William and Rebecca had seven children.

  1. Charles W. Broughton married Mary Jane Vanscoick on October 10, 1864.
  2. Cordelia Broughton married Herman L. Helman on September 1, 1864.
  3. Mortimer Broughton, born in July 1847, married Susan Amos on October 20, 1871. Mortimer Broughton served 3 years in the Civil War as a member of Company 4, 88th Indiana. The couple lived in Kendallville. They had one child named Morton in June 1881. Mortimer died in October 1920.
  4. Forbes Broughton, MD, was born April 20, 1849. He served in the Civil War, after which he continued his education and opened a medical practice in Kendallville. He married Abigail Call, the daughter of Joseph and Olivia Call, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1876. They eventually settled in Wolcottville. The couple had two children, but only one lived to adulthood. Leartus Broughton was born July 9, 1879 and died October 13, 1879. Burial was at Avilla Cemetery. Three years later, Bernard Broughton was born in 1882. Bernard married a woman named Lizzie and lived until 1937. Lizzie lived until 1971. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery. Forbes and his wife, Abigail, both died in 1933 and were also buried at Woodland Cemetery.
  5. Lafayette Broughton, born circa 1856, married Drusilla Graham on November 15, 1877. To them were born two children. 1. Edna, born in 1880 and 2. Dallas William, born on November 15, 1897. Edna married William Penn on December 21, 1898. They had a daughter named Mabel Lucille on June 6, 1906. William died in February 1931 and Edna died in 1952. They are buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Lafayette's son, Dallas William Broughton married Leona Merriman on February 27, 1920, just a few days after her 21st birthday. She was born Feb. 18, 1899 to Hersha Guy and Flora Merriman.
  6. Frank Broughton was born in 1860. He married Lola Mary Kinsey on June 1, 1884.
  7. Nora L. Broughton was born October 15, 1862 and died June 12, 1878. She's buried at Avilla Cemetery.

William Broughton became a widower on October 16, 1880 when his wife Rebecca died. William remarried a short time later. His second wife was Mrs. Hannah (Cosper) Shroyer of Wayne County Ohio. William's death happened in 1893 when he was in Denver Colorado. He was buried at Avilla Cemetery.
