Amos Broughton's Descendants

Amos Broughton (Jr) was born in Woodstock Connecticut on April 5, 1746 to Amos Broughton and his wife Mary Coates. He married another Woodstock-native named Abigail Corbin on December 3, 1772. The wedding took place at Worcester, Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Abigail was twenty years old when she spoke her vows, having been born on the third of December in 1752 to Ebenezer and Martha Corbin.

The Broughton couple would raise a large family, the names of 12 children being known:

Amos Broughton (III)

Amos Broughton III (We only use the third to distinguish him from his father and grandfather.) was born to Amos and Abigail Corbin Broughton on September 25, 1790 in Woodstock, Connecticut. He married Nancy Timmerman in 1812. The daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Keller) Timmerman, Nancy's date of birth was December 11, 1794.

To Amos and Nancy were born:

Emeline Broughton July 26, 1813

Mary Edna Broughton
Samuel Broughton Aug. 4, 1819
William Broughton June 29, 1882
Cordelia Broughton Aug. 5, 1824
Nathan Broughton Mar. 18, 1828
Lucia Ann Broughton Feb. 6, 1830
Annue J. Broughton Mar. 15, 1832
Orville Broughton Apr. 6, 1838

In 1834, Amos and Nancy started moving their family westward, first to Clark County, Ohio and then to Champaign County, Ohio. It was in Champaign County where, shortly after the birth of his youngest child, Amos lost his life on August 17, 1838. Despite the loss of their patron, Amos Broughton's family continued their trek, finally settling in Swan Township, Noble County, Indiana in the fall of 1838. According to the book, Goodspped's History of Noble County, the family had little money and no food, but all went to work - receiving provisions of any kind as pay - and managed to weather the winter.

It would be nearly thirty years before Amos' widow, Nancy, would remarry which she did to Joseph Cummings on December 6, 1864. Her second marriage would prove to be brief when just three years later Cummings died. Widowed for a second time, Nancy would live into her 80's, passing away peacefully in her sleep in 1876. She's buried beside her daughter, Annue, at Swan Cemetery. Her obituary is quoted as follows:

"Mrs. Nancy Cummings of Swan Township died Feb. 27th, 1876, at the advanced age of 81 years. She was born in the State of New York and emigrated thence to Ohio, where she lived several years, and there she buried her first husband, Mr. Broughton. She came to Noble County in 1836, and settled in the township where she died. She was the mother of William and Samuel Broughton, sho reside among us, and who are justly held in high esteem among their fellow citizens, and who owe their success in life to the wise counsel of their mother, for being left fatherless in their childhood their training depended upon the mother. She was the mother of ten children, of whom eight are living. She was a member of the M. E. church from early youth until her death, and when she became aware that the time for her departure was at hand, her mind was tranquil and serene, and with full assurance of unending bliss above, she fell asleep to wake amid the glories of heaven."

Anna Broughton

Anna Broughton was born on November 26, 1792 to Amos and Abigail Corbin Broughton. Like her brother, Amos (III), Anna would also marry into the Timmerman family. Anna wed Henry Timmerman (Jr), the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Keller) Timmerman. Henry was five years Anna's senior, having been born on June 19, 1787.

Henry and Anna would have seven children: Lydia - b.March 6,1818; Alexander - b.1823; Adda Ann - b.Sep. 6, 1829; Lorinda - b. ? ; Jane - b. 1830; Henry - b.May 12, 1833 and Ruel - b. ?

Anna and Henry continued to live in Indiana until their deaths. Henry died on September 28, 1855. Anna followed less than three years later, passing away on February 13, 1858. Both are buried at Swan Cemetery.
