Saturday, June 13, 1998 - Screening

I had a small screening at Outpost in the City last night. I think it went very well. Heather, Dave, Sean, Katy, friends acquaintances of Sean and Katy's family were all there. Was a little cozy, but the place accommodated them well. It's the first time all but those involved with post had seen anything! I've seen the thing myself probably more than a hundred times, but never on the big screen and never with people directly involved with production. Needless to say I was very nervous. It was the film's debut.

But it was very well-received and I must confess I was highly impressed with how it plays on the big screen. The story comes through and the tension is magnified! The actors did such a wonderful job, and the cut in of the subjective point of view shots expand the characters in a very honest fashion. I think the first hotel scene drags a bit, but it does have pertinent dialogue between Carol and Michael and sets up the 2nd part of the film. The structure of the hotel scene also sets up the cutaway to the girls' room nicely, and Carol's poem toward the end of the scene. The music sets it off very well.

The film is better-crafted than a lot of what I've seen in the theaters recently. You don't know what's going to happen, but see these three hearts, one a loose cannon, cruising around. You just wonder what will happen next, what's going to blow up. The film quickly gets the characters out of their everyday roles of adults/young person and puts them in my opinion on a level playing field. Carol is very much the little girl, Michael the little boy, but they're both teachers. You don't know what they're capable of. Mary is young, but assertive. You're not exactly sure what she's capable of, either, but you get an idea, so you'd best keep your eye on her.

Okay, I can go on psycho-analyzing my own film for ad nauseum, so let me stop now before I fall off the edge. It's funny that last year, exactly a year ago today, we were deep in production having problems problems problems. I can't read the diary without laughing. How insane!

I can't wait to do it again.
