Welcome to The Jim Carrey Experience FAQ's section. These are the most Frequently Asked Questions about Jim Carrey. And here are the answers
Q: Is that actually Gavin MacLeod (sp?) in 'Ace Ventura'
A: This question concerns the scene in 'Ace' where a white uniformed lackey opens the door
of a billionaire's mansion and Carrey says "Hello Captain Steubing, how are Gopher and
Doc?" I had to do a lot of research to answer this question.
I determined that since Gavin MacLeod's (sp?)
name is not in the credits that he was probably not in the movie.
Q: Is Jim Carrey planning on doing 'dumb' movies for the rest of his career?
A: Ha, Ha, Ha, the answer is no! Carrey has made numerous comments about trying to
expand his repetoire into drama and light drama. (Think Tom Hanks, sorry Raquel!) An
interviewer on a local TV show in Boston asked Carrey if he ever wanted to do Shakespeare
and he replied, "Sure, if I can figure out what it all means. I just have to get my decoder
going." We may see Carrey in a dramatic role sometime in early '97. It's a risk, but I wouldn't
exactly call Carrey risk aversive, based on his past.
Carrey has been very interested in a script called 'The Truman Show' for awhile now. This
'magic realism' movie is about an insurance adjuster whose life is turned upside down when he
finds out that his life may actually be a TV show. Since Hollywood grades everything on how
close it is to something else, people are saying that this movie will be to Carrey what 'Big' was
to Tom Hanks. (A chance to cross over into drama, but still retain some of the comedy.)
Peter Weir is interested in directing. (Weir did 'Witness' with Harrison Ford.)
Q: Are Carrey's films appropriate for children?
A: As long as you don't mind your children hopping around on what amounts to a severe
sugar high, the films are fine. I would think twice before showing The Mask to a really
hyperactive kid. Lots of people have reported getting 'contact highs' from this film and it could
completely overload the system of a truly impressionable child. Proceed with caution.
On the other hand, kids like really warped, high energy things and Jim Carrey is one of those
guys that kids just naturally take to. If you do your job as a parent and screen movies with
your kids - like you're supposed to - then your kids won't pick up 'ideas' from the movies and
go off and do weird things (like, presumably, Oliver Stone's kids do.) Sex is a really squirmy
topic (in America, anyway) and Carrey's films have lots of silly sex jokes in them. If you are
very sensitive to sex jokes then, for goodness' sakes, skip the movies, or don't leave 'em lying
around for the kids to see.
Q: Has Jim Carrey ever done a porno flick?
A: Not that we know of, but we placed an anonymous phone call to Hard Copy's Viewer
Mail phone line and I'm sure they put their crack investigative team right on the story. As near
as we can tell, the rumors about a porno movie refer to a cheapy nudie flick that Carrey made
in Montreal in the early '80's. (All dialogue in French.) The then starving actor was paid about
$500 bucks to walk around nude in a film that had something to do with Swedish saunas.
Maybe I'm a stickler for details but I don't think this counts as a 'porn' film. No sex, just
nudity. (Which doesn't seem to bother Carrey all that much. He has a bare butt scene in Ace
Ventura, and there was the Comedy Store 20th Anniversary Special on HBO. The so-called
'nudie' film was pretty tame.)
Don't bother looking for the above mentioned film. Sources have indicated that all rights and
copies have been bought up and it won't be in distribution. (Hey, what's the point of making
big bucks if you can't use it to erase a few mistakes.)
Q: Does Carrey favor any charities or stuff like that? Does he do benefits?
A: Yeah, I know of at least a couple that he has supported for
years. He has done stuff for 'Comic Relief', which is a charity that
aids homeless people. Carrey did that show in '92, and
apeared on some of the 'Comic Relief' specialty videos that came out.
Carrey was Honorary Chairman for the National Veterans Foundation (NVF)
A-PAC-A-LAFS-NOW (Apocalypse Now) comedy event in June of '95, held at The
Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He had appeared at six of the seven previous engagements,
but his filming schedule on 'Ace 2' kept him out of the event this year. Carrey said of the
event, "The foundation (NVF) has gained a lot of support from the comedy world. Many of
us have tremendous respect for the work that is carried out by NVF on a daily basis. Using
comedy to heal and help those less fortunate is a great thing." Carrey's ex-wife Melissa was
the Event Chair of 1995's charity event. For more info about this cause call NVF at
