HELMET / MELVINS WARTIERS ENSEMBLE @Irving,Sept22nd,1997.
This concert was real good. It was packed and I still struggled to stay up front, despite the heavy bodies flying over my head. Helmet started their show by jumping onto stage and playing IronHead. I mean, the crowd went wild. This guy behind me got so excited, he banged his head, and his jaw hit my skull. It hurt, he stopped, I guess he got more hurt. Well, I kept ducking each time a body flew over, but someone else would try to take my spot. I mean I was determined to see Helmet. Each time a body flew over my head, I screamed in terror and in happiness cuz, I was seeing Helmet. Some dum guy, thought that I was standing up front by mistake and said that he could call a bouncer to take me out. I could take the heat. But I must admit it is hard for a 107lb girl such as myself, to survive in front of a pit with many strong 150lb guys. It was tough.
Then Page asked for requests. I screamed for Sinatra, which was from their first album Strap It On. Some guys laughed at me. I think they thought that I didn't know their music or something cuz I was a girl. Well the fools didn't know that it is a legit song. But Page didn't hear me, much less care. They played mainly from In the Mean Time, and Wilema's Rainbow. Not much from After taste, that is the only album I don't have. During the show, my whole body felt numb and squashed, there was a time, I was even suspended between 4 sweaty bodies, and my feet didn't touch the ground. During the show, I kind of looked at Henry and kind of liked him, I thought, he was staring at me, but I thought my imagination had gotten the better of me.
Towards the end, Henry broke his guitar. He then neatly folded the strings and came to the tip of the stage and held it out. Crazy gorillas leaped forward trying to pull it. I knew then, there was no chance I was gonna get it. He kept pulling it away from the monkeys, and shook his head and pointed to someone in the audience. My friend screamed and she said" I think he is pointing to you". And sure enough I looked up and he was trying to maneuver the guitar towards me. Well I held on to it, and he let it go. Then he walked away. At that moment the gorillas attacked me pulled it away from me, My friend tried to hold on to it, but it was no use. The big bouncers saw what was happening to it, they pulled it away from the crowd. I signaled the bouncer to lift me over the gates. He lifted me over and gave me the guitar. At that moment the gorillas were enraged that a girl who didn't even look like a punk, got the guitar. So they boo ed me. I didn't care. I walked with the heavy guitar, towards the end. Some people later hi fived me, but I missed their fives, cuz, I was sooooo tired and weak. As I stood at the side, this Helmet roadie came up to me and said, that they needed some parts from the guitar. He then said I could meet the band. So, I said ok. We made it backstage.

BACKSTAGE: Henry recognized me and asked me if I got the guitar. We talked a bit. But I really didn't know what to say, cuz, it just seemed weird. He was kind of quiet, and we were kind of just standing there , not saying much. The roadie, came up and gave me the guitar, Henry autographed it, he even went and got a pen, but it was a ball point pen, he then said "I think it will come off", he then went asking around for a better pen and came back with a felt tip marker. He started writing on it. He then paused and said "You know, I wanted you to have it". I didn't even say anything, not thanks, or even asked him Why? I just said nothing. I kind of regret not saying much. He signed the guitar with love. I asked to shake his hand. He gave me his hand, and exchanged a very limp handshake. It seemed corny, so I asked for a hug. I liked that!!! I guess I seemed real shy. Oh well.I went around to the other guys and got it signed. John was nice. Page looked at Henry's signature cynically. I don't think, he liked that very much. I dunno. I couldn't help noticing that a lot of people were ass kissing the band members. It's like many of these people felt very important because they knew the Helmet guys. I guess that's what happens when you are famous. When I become famous, and get surrounded by ass kissers I wonder if they will eat my shit if served on a plate. heheheh. I mean these are just small things that cross my mind. It seemed that everyone wanted to know someone famous. Henry, asked a camera girl to take a picture, he kind of put his arm around me.
Then I got the signatures from the other guys. I asked Chris Taylor for an autograph, he gave it to me. I think he was a bit obnoxious and a bit bimboish. But if I were him I'd be obnoxious also. He said that I could show all my friends the guitar. I said I don't have many friends. He said, after you show them it, you will get plenty. I was so tempted to say, "but I don't want superficial friends, like how you have" But I didn't. He also wanted a picture of me. But he put the guitar onmy body, and I think he kind of felt me up. Oh well, I guess, he thought any girl should automatically go for him. Well, at least he has good taste in girls. Well Henry, was very nice to me. Also as me and my friend were walking to the subway. We saw Henry in front of us, he turned around and waved for a while. Unfortunately, I didn't wave back , cuz I was holding the guitar with both hands. I kind of regretted that. But overall it was a good experience. I just wish I thanked him or maybe talked a bit more, but I just couldn't think straight, cuz, I was too tired. Also it is difficult to talk to a rock star. I mean what's to say. I am sure he is sick of hearing people rant how great he and helmet is. But oh well..................... |

They were good. They rocked. Some one lifted their middle finger at them, and the leader singer, leant over, stopped playing and lifted his middle finger back. People were then screaming for Helmet. At the end, the drummer, in his dirty old underwear stood on his drum set and started to flex his puny body. I thought it was funny, so I laughed. I could swear he looked at me with a stern face, since I was up front. I got a bit scared and stopped laughing. I think he was amused

I don't like this band. Even though they had a lot of people on stage playing, it still sounded boring. They suck. |
