The PKE Meter is actually the first piece of equipment that was developed for this field. Long before the Ghostbusters existed, Doctors Venkman, Stanz and myself worked for a major university. During our studies of paranormal activity, the meter was developed.
This is one of the few pieces of our equipment that does not rely on the fact that a ghost has a negative charge. Instead, it detects ectoplasmic molecules in the air, much in the same way a radon detector sniffs out radon. The more powerful the ghost, the more of an ectoplasmic trail it leaves off. Thus we can not only tell when a ghost is in the area, but how strong it is as well. This way we can have the proton packs and trap ready in advance.
