Love
means different things to different people. We feel
it in different ways and at different times. It is a
precarious situation when one person feels they are
"in love" and the other doesn't.
One
night my girlfriend (at the time) told me she "loved
me" on the phone. An awakward silence follwed. I
didn't know what to say. I wanted to be both true to
myself and sensitive to her feelings at the same time.
Unfortunately, I couldn't say what I didn't feel. The
awkward silence on my end of the line that say put a
strain on both our hearts and our relationship from
that day forward.
I
really admired here for having the courage to be
vulnerable and say what she felt. However, I didn't
say, "I love you" that day because I want
to be able to mean it when I say it. There is a great
deal of integrity in being true to your heart. It is
important to realize that love doesn't have to be
mutual. Although it hurts when it's not, know that
just because the person doesn't love you the same way
in return doesn't mean that person doesn't care for
you deeply.
