The Bond Villains Page
Every hero needs a nemesis, and, for James Bond, it is always the supreme
challenge with world domination as the ultimate prize. With their
strange fascination for monorails, orange jumpsuits and scantily clad women, the
Bond villains have always been the epitome of evil. Their plans are set on the
grandest scale, ingeniously planned, thoroughly instigated and magnificently
insane. This page is devoted to their audacity, sophistication and
terminal stupidity.
The Villain's World Domination Chart
Dr. Julius No
The first of Bond's enemies, Joseph Wiseman
made Dr. No a sinister and thoughtful villain, very faithful to his counterpart
in the Fleming novel. Although cloaked in secrecy, his ruthlessness and cold
calculation early in the film make his quiet and well mannered appearance all
the more intimidating.
Most memorable quote
"I never fail, Mr. Bond."
Ernst Stavro Blofeld
Quite possibly the ultimate Bond villain, the head of SPECTRE (the Special
Executive for Counter-Espionage, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) has
been pitted against Bond on numerous occasions. His plans have always been
foolproof, and yet thwarted in the end by 007's quick wit, remarkable
resourcefulness and amazing gadgets. Although his face was not seen until his
third movie appearance, Blofeld was first played by
Anthony Dawson
and Hammer Horror star Eric Pohlman (uncredited)
in From Russia With Love. He
re-surfaced in Thunderball, followed quickly by
his unmasked appearance in You Only Live Twice, played
by Donald Pleasence.
He was then featured in both On Her
Majesty's Secret Service (played by
Telly Savalas of Kojak fame) and
Diamonds Are Forever (personified by
Charles Gray,
who had previously appeared in You Only Live
Twice). Although allegedly dispatched by Bond in the pre-title sequence
of For Your Eyes Only, Blofeld made one final
appearance in Never Say Never Again (played by
Flash Gordon's Max Von Sydow), Kevin McClory's remake of
Thunderball.
Most memorable quotes
"Kill Bond, now!"
"This is the price of failure, Mr. Bond."
Goldfinger
One of the most famous and sinister of the villains, Auric Goldfinger
(played perfectly by Gert Fröbe) can never be remembered without
mentioning his mute henchman, Oddjob. Goldfinger's remarkable planning and
ruthless execution made him more than a match for Bond's ingenuity, whilst
Oddjob provided the supreme physical challenge. Only thwarted by 007's
irresistible charms, Goldfinger's plan to
break into Fort Knox was perhaps one of the most daring to date.
Most memorable quote
Bond: Do you expect me to talk?
Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!
Emilio Largo
SPECTRE's number two and one of their best agents, Emilio Largo (played by
Adolfo Celi) was a
man with a plan who was determined not to be stopped. He lets nothing
get in the way of intention to blackmail the world, whilst still enjoying the finer things
in life. In Thunderball, he cares little for even those closest
to him, going as far as murdering the brother of his mistress, and torturing
Domino when he finds her to be untrustworthy.
Finally thwarted by 007's relentlessness, Largo is one of the more memorable Bond villains.
Most memorable quote
"Heat and cold, applied scientifically..."
Kananga/Mr. Big
A two faced Carribean criminal with a plan to flood the American heroin
market, Kananga cleverly used voodoo to inspire loyalty in his henchmen
and fear in his enemies. In Live and Let Die, as
Mr. Big, he leads one of the toughest, most organised street gangs in
Harlem; and as Kananga, under the guise of diplomatic security, he
controls one of the largest heroin production centres in the world. Played
fiendishly by Yaphet Kotto, Kananga's plan is finally thwarted by his
trust in his voodoo high priestess, Solitaire,
and 007's endurance and audacity.
Most memorable quote
Bond: My name is....
Mr. Big: Names is for tombstones, baby.
Francisco Scaramanga
The man with the golden gun, Francisco Scaramanga
(given the perfect polish by
Ian Fleming's nephew, Christopher Lee) is the best
and most highly paid assassin in the world. His million dollar fee, and golden,
single shot kills make him highly sought after by the criminal underworld. Not
satisfied with his notoriety, he plans to monopolise solar power; but is
betrayed by his girlfriend (Maud Adams), who enlists 007 as her champion,
believing him to be the only man who can beat Scaramanga.
Most memorable quote
Scaramanga: My golden gun against your Walther PPK, each of us with a 50-50 chance.
Bond: 6 bullets to your one?
Scaramanga: I only need one.
Karl Stromberg
A megalomanic with an obsession for the ocean, Karl Stromberg (played by
Curt Jurgens) enacts a formidable plan for world genocide in The
Spy Who Loved Me. After developing a system for tracking nuclear submarines,
he captures two in his fake tanker, the Liparus; then sends them out, helmed by
his orange-jumpsuited minions, to destroy New York and Moscow and start a global
holocaust. Foiled only by 007 and XXX's determination, he is finally confronted by
Bond in his underwater headquarters - Atlantis.
Most memorable quote
Bond: Your time is running out, Stromberg.
Stromberg: Your's too, Mr. Bond, your's too; and faster than you think.
Hugo Drax
Yet another egocentrical megalomanic, Hugo Drax from
Moonraker is given a double edge by
Michael Lonsdale, his quiet good manners hiding an angry, troubled soul. By the
world, he is seen as a great businessman, a philanthropist and a genius.
To Bond, he is a madman whose over-inflated ego now threatens the world. His plan to
annihilate the inhabitants of Earth in favour of his own "super-race" in
space conjures up shades of Karl Stromberg from The Spy Who
Loved Me, but is given a new twist by the space station based
headquarters.
Most memorable quote
"Look after Mr. Bond. See that some harm comes to him."
Kristatos
Perhaps one of the most sly of all Bond villains, Kristatos (played by
Julian Glover) attempts not only to sell NATO's ATAC to the Soviets, but to get Bond
to kill his competitor and long-time adversary, Columbo.
Appearing in For Your Eyes Only,
Kristatos is a smuggler and a thief with no scruples and a score of hired
killers led by Emile Locque. He has a poor sense of
honour, having gained a medal from the British during the war while he was
actually serving as a double agent. His only redeeming feature is his concern
for his hot-headed, ice skating protoge, Bibi Dahl.
Most memorable quote
"You cannot just arrest him, you must find a different way. You may
have to kill him."
Max Largo
Reprising the role played by Adolfo Celi in Thunderball,
Klaus Maria Brandauer makes
the part of Max Largo his own in Never Say Never Again. SPECTRE
operative number 2 initiates a plan to detonate nuclear devices at two locations in the
world unless a ransom is paid. However, lets his pride and temper get the better of him
when Bond steals his mistress Domino.
Most memorable quote
Bond: He's certifiable.
Kamal Khan
Another smuggler connected with the Soviet Union, Kamal Khan (played by
Louis Jourdan)
double-crosses his partner, Octopussy
to make a double killing by selling stolen Russian jewelry and planting a
nuclear device on an American Air Force base. With no love lost for any of his
associates, Khan stops at nothing to gain his fortune; but his lust for wealth
is sent crashing down in flames when 007 steps in to save the world.
Most memorable quotes
"Spend the money quickly, Mr. Bond."
Max Zorin
The product of a German genetic experiment, Max Zorin (played by
Christopher Walken)
is a psychopathic genius, with a daring plan to monopolise the world's
computer market. In A View To A Kill, he intends to
destroy Silicon Valley through a tremendous earthquake which he will initiate. Like
Goldfinger, his desire to win at everything brings
007 onto the scene, and showing his true character to his lover, Mayday,
finally brings an end to his scheming.
Most memorable quote
Mayday: Wow! What a view...
Zorin: To a kill!
Brad Whittaker
Brad Whittaker (played by Joe Don Baker) is an illegal arms dealer. His
fascination with war and his failure in the military led him to use other means
for organising his own comradeship-in-arms. Expelled from Westpoint for cheating, he
spent a short stint as a mercenary in the Belgian Congo before working with
various criminal organisations to help finance his first arms deals. In
The Living Daylights, with the help of Georgi Koskov,
he attempts to use Soviet money to buy opium at the same time
as using 007 to kill the suspicious Russian head of secret operations.
Most memorable quote
"Well, that's too bad, Bond. You know, you could've been a live rich man
instead of a poor dead one."
Franz Sanchez
When Sanchez's drug dealing leads to his capture, he takes out his annoyance on Felix
Leiter and makes a bitter enemy. In spite of his illegal business, he allows Bond into
his organisation, perhaps his first and definitely his last mistake. Sanchez makes use of TV evangelism
to sell his dope, and lives the high life on his profits.
Robert Davi makes
Licence To Kill's Franz Sanchez a tough, almost likable villain.
Most memorable quote
Perez: What about the money, padrone?
Sanchez: Launder it.
Alec Trevelyan
A British spy turned Russian Mafia head, Alec Trevelyan (played by Sean Bean) once
worked for MI6 as 006, but defected to a life of crime during a mission
with 007 in a Russian nerve gas factory. The son of Cossacks, his parents
dead, he felt betrayed and rejected by his adopted homeland, and blames
Bond for facial scars sustained in an earlier mission. Nine years later,
he masterminds a villainous plan to rob the Bank of England of huge
amounts of cash before destroying the nation's capital with the GoldenEye satellite. His downfall is engineered
and executed ruthlessly by Bond.
Most memorable quote
"I might as well ask you if all those vodka martinis drown out the
screams of the men you've killed, or if you find forgiveness in the arms
of all those willing women for the dead ones you failed to protect."
Elliot Carver
Elliot Carver is a worldwide media baron, the head of the Carver Media Group,
who will stop at nothing to get a good story. Realising the media potential of
global conflict, Carver (played by Jonathan Pryce)
manipulates the Chinese and British governments into
a military standoff as the vehicle to launch his new 24hr satellite news channel.
Tomorrow Never Dies is named after the Tomorrow newspaper,
which Carver uses to report his underhanded operations to the world.
Most memorable quote
"There's no news like bad news."
Viktor "Renard" Zokas
Viktor Zokas (played menacingly by Robert Carlyle)
is an international terrorist intent on gaining a monopoly of the newly discovered oil fields in
Azerbaijan. Also known as "Renard", he kidnapped Elektra King, demanding a ransom of $5,000,000.
He still carries a bullet in his head from a failed assassination attempt
by 009. The bullet has destroyed his nervous system, making him incapable of feeling pain.
Most memorable quotes
Dr. Warmflash: He feels no pain. He can push himself harder, longer than any normal man.
"No hard feelings, Mr. Bond."
